The human mind has development hugely over the last two and a half million years, to the point where our brains now define who we are, and humanity overall.
It’s no secret that our early ancestors needed lots of energy-rich foods to survive, but one report published in the Journal of Applied Psychology suggests that without nutrients like magnesium and zinc, the human mind would not have been able to function.

One of the professors on this project, Professor Mouritsen, stated that nutrition was available to early Homo sapiens through seaweed, which was harvested on shores as a consistent supply of the necessary vitamins and minerals.
Drawn out to the coast
According to the article, humans broke off from the chimpanzee – their closest living relative – around five-to-seven million years ago. But, the survival behaviours of our ancestors went through another shift around two-to-two and a half million years ago. This was due to the harsh climate of the African savannah, which drew Homo sapiens towards the coast for their food supplies. Foraging over these longer distances would have changed our posture, even contributing to bipedalism, and this would result in a necessary change of diet.
The coast may have held the answer to these dietary changes.
The discovery of seaweed
Did seaweed help shape humanity? At the coast, our ancestors would have discovered food like fish, snails, crustaceans, bird eggs and – yes – seaweed. But unlike shellfish, seaweed doesn’t rely on tides, it’s there all the time. This would have made it much more accessible to these early humans, who would not have possessed the necessary knowledge of tidal flows. They would therefore harvest seaweed and serve it to all family members, including women and children.
But the goodness of seaweed did not only benefit our ancestors.
“Seaweed is just as healthy and nutritious for humans today as it was millions of years ago,” says Professor Mouritsen.
